Things have been pretty busy lately taking out clients and most of the focus has been on walleyes. The early morning and late day have been the best. We have been working mid-lake structure in 20 to 30 feet of water. Drifting with fatheads has been producing the best results. Jigging fatheads has also been working well. Darker colored small jigs have been producing!
A grandfather and son enjoyed some quality walleye fishing. We were jigging night crawlers and leeches in 20 to 30 feet of water in the rocks. Mid lake humps were holding the fish. I taught them some new techniques and we boated over 30 walleyes in the morning. While the night bite is hot the morning outing brought in more numbers. Here is a few.
My best action this past couple of weeks came fishing near steep drop-offs in 20-25 feet. Rigging Leeches, crawlers or chubs has been best on most days but each day is different. In the morning, evening and on cloudy or windy days, try a deep diving crankbait, they are hard to beat.
It is still a good idea to check any of those shallower weed or sand honey holes right now as fish are still using these areas too. I still prefer to mark fish first before we wet a line during this time of year as this tends to maximize the number of fish we can put in the boat. You can scan a lot of bottom at 4 mph and locate more schools of fish, upping the odds of a good haul. This past week the fish have been hitting. I was out with some clients this week and we were targeting fish! Muskies were getting very aggressive and the Smallie's were hitting on chubs. We caught and release this nice 45 inch Musky and this exceptional 23 inch Smallie.
Went river fishing with a client this weekend. Two nice 10 to 15 pound blue catfish and a channel catfish. While we were casting for Muskies, caught and released this monster 70 inch - 100 pound Sturgeon. Caught and release a smaller Muskie as well! Anyone interested in River fishing - let me know - its way different than lake fishing as the Fish tend to grow bigger and are aggressive!
Walleyes! - The one in the picture was from this weekend a nice 22 inches caught by a client. Night crawlers work best but leeches are still working. The dusk is the best time I have found to catch nice walleyes. We could tow limits on this outing! The water temp is high in most lake so night time Muskie fishing is working better than the day time.
Well it is nearing the end of June and the weather has not been cooperating but the fishing has if your willing to get out there. Musky fishing has been very good. Smaller baits seem to be working well but we have been also casting some large rubber baits and have landed some big fish on these as well. Try top water and small bucktails. Walleye are very active off the weed beds. We have been fishing the wood and weeds and crawlers seem to work best at this point. Try jigging in 20 feet. We have also been fishing the rivers and the Bass are very active along with the Musky. Try getting out on a canoe and use chubs on the local rivers.
